Efficient and Consistent Grading: A Spotlight on Gradescope

This fall, the Learning Tech will continue to feature a series of “Tool Spotlights” highlighting a variety of instructional tools. Each post will follow a consistent format built around three guiding questions and will conclude with a link to a quickstart guide to help readers get started.

Throughout the series, we will explore the broader teaching and learning context—for example, examining how timely and consistent feedback can support student learning—and introduce the featured technology as one way to support that approach. We will begin this semester by shining a spotlight on Gradescope.

Gradescope is an assessment tool that helps instructors create, collect, grade, and return assignments and exams. It supports handwritten work, fixed-template assignments, online assignments, programming assignments, and bubble sheets. Instructors can use rubrics, annotations, answer grouping, and assignment statistics to provide consistent feedback and streamline grading.

What problem does this tool help solve?

Providing meaningful feedback is an important part of the learning process, but doing so can be time-consuming—particularly in large-enrollment courses where Teaching Assistants (TAs) may be tasked with providing feedback on assignments and problem sets or instructors provide students partial credit or substantial feedback on assignments. Gradescope helps instructors and TAs grade more efficiently while providing students with consistent, detailed feedback. Instructors can build and adjust rubrics as they grade, apply the same comments and criteria across multiple submissions, and annotate student work directly. This can reduce repetitive grading tasks and improve consistency across TAs while making it easier for students to understand the gaps in their learning and how their work was evaluated.

Gradescope is especially helpful for handwritten work, problem sets, exams, and other assignments where students need to show their process rather than simply select a correct answer. For certain template assignments, Gradescope also offers optional AI-assisted answer grouping, which suggests groups of similar responses for instructor review.

What are the key considerations or limitations?

Gradescope is most effective when assignments and rubrics are intentionally designed around clear learning objectives. While the tool can streamline grading and feedback, instructors should still plan how they will communicate expectations, provide feedback, and recognize different approaches to solving a problem.

Here are some best practices for using Gradescope in the classroom:

  • Develop rubric criteria that are clear, specific, and aligned with the assignment’s learning objectives.
  • Use reusable comments, which can be created in Gradescope, to provide actionable feedback on common strengths or errors.
  • Review and refine the rubric as patterns emerge during assessing student work.
  • Explain to students how to access and use their feedback to improve future work.
  • When using fixed-template PDF assignments, provide clear instructions about where students should write or mark their responses.
  • Consider how partial credit will be awarded, particularly for multi-step problems or assignments where an early error may affect later work.
  • Begin with a low- or no-stakes assignment to give an opportunity for students to practice submitting assignments in Gradescope and TAs to grade and provide assignment feedback.

Gradescope’s question-by-question grading workflow may be less effective for assignments that need to be reviewed holistically or where each part of an assignment depends heavily on a student’s earlier response. The optional AI-assisted grouping feature is limited to certain fixed-template PDF assignment types and requires instructor review; it does not make grading decisions on its own.

How does it integrate with UVACanvas and existing workflows?

Gradescope integrates directly with UVACanvas allowing instructors to create and link Gradescope assignments within a UVACanvas course. Students access assignments through your course, with no separate account required.

Instructors can sync their UVACanvas roster with Gradescope and post final scores to the UVACanvas Gradebook. Once grades are published, students can review their scored and annotated submissions, rubric feedback, and comments through the UVACanvas assignment link.

This integration keeps the assessment and feedback process within the core course environment, helping students access assignments, feedback, and grades in a familiar location. It also allows instructors to incorporate Gradescope into their existing UVACanvas workflow while supporting a wider range of assessment types.
