What is Gradescope?

Gradescope is an assessment and grading platform that streamlines assignment submission, grading, and feedback for instructors while providing students with clear, timely insights into their work. Integrated seamlessly with Canvas, Gradescope supports paper-based, digital, and coding assignments.

How can Gradescope enhance teaching and learning?

GradeScope enhances teaching and learning by streamlining grading while improving the quality and consistency of feedback. For instructors, it saves time through digital submission, AI-assisted grouping, and reusable rubrics. Additionally, GradeScope’s analytics help instructors identify class-wide trends and adjust instruction, making assessment more efficient, consistent and supportive of learning.

Engage

GradeScope engages students by providing timely, clear feedback that helps them understand expectations and stay motivated to improve. For instructors, interactive rubrics and digital annotation make the grading process more focused and intentional.

Enhance

GradeScope enhances teaching and learning by improving the consistency and efficiency of grading, allowing instructors to provide more meaningful feedback in less time. Its analytics highlight patterns in student understanding, supporting more responsive and equitable instruction.

Extend

GradeScope extends learning beyond the assignment by providing students with actionable feedback for future work. Additionally, instructors review assessment data to identify trends and inform reteaching, enrichment, and instructional adjustments after grading is complete.

Key Features

Grading Paper Assignments

Gradescope allows instructors to create and grade paper-based assignments by using digital tools to make the grading process more efficient. Students can upload photos or scans of their work, and Gradescope provides a variety of tools for Instructors and TAs to utilize to ensure that efficient and consistent grading can occur.

Assignment Types Guide

Why Use This?

Paper assignments in Gradescope combine the flexibility of handwritten work with the efficiency of digital grading. Instructors can organize and grade large numbers of submissions more efficiently while applying consistent grading criteria across students. The platform also allows the instructor to provide instantaneous digital feedback without having to take the time to pass back the physical papers themselves.

Grading Digital Assignments

Gradescope Digital Assignments allow students to complete and submit assignments online while instructors organize and grade their work in Gradescope. Instructors can connect Gradescope assignments to their Canvas courses, providing a streamlined process for instructors and TAs to complete grading and for students to still access grades and feedback in a manner they are familiar with.

Creating a Digital Assignment

Why Use This?

Digital assignments provide an efficient manner to collect, organize, and evaluate student work in one place. They can support a variety of assignment formats while reducing the administrative work associated with collecting and distributing student submissions. Instructors can also provide targeted feedback and use consistent grading criteria to communicate expectations and support student learning.

Shared Rubrics

Gradescope provides flexible rubric tools for evaluating and providing feedback on student work. Instructors can use Grid Rubrics to organize criteria and point values in a visual grid or List Rubrics to apply individual criteria more flexibly to student responses. Rubrics can also be shared with other instructors and graders, allowing multiple people to use the same grading criteria across assignments, sections, or courses.

Using RubricsWhy Use This?

Rubrics can make grading more consistent, efficient, and transparent for both instructors and students. Grid Rubrics can help streamline grading when assignments have clearly defined criteria, while List Rubrics provide greater flexibility for assignments with varied or individualized responses. Shared rubrics are especially useful for courses with multiple instructors or teaching assistants because they establish a common framework for evaluating student work and providing feedback.

Feedback Grouping

Gradescope’s feedback grouping allows instructors to group similar student responses and apply the same feedback or grading adjustment to multiple submissions. Instructors can identify common errors or patterns in student work and address them efficiently while maintaining individualized grades.

AI-Assisted Grading and Answer Groupings

Why Use This?

Feedback grouping can make grading more efficient when multiple students demonstrate the same misunderstanding or make similar errors. Instructors can provide consistent feedback to groups of students while spending less time repeating the same comments across individual submissions. Identifying patterns in student responses can also help instructors recognize common learning gaps and determine when additional instruction or clarification may be needed.

UVACanvas Integration

GradeScope is built directly into UVA Canvas. Gradescope appears as an option under Submission Type → External Tool, allowing GradeScope activities to be seamlessly integrated into Canvas assignments and modules for easy access by all learners. You can also access GradeScope by selected “Gradescope” in the left-hand navigation of the course. More information about Canvas integration is available in the Gradescope Canvas Integration Guide.
